Brew News From Around the South

Sweetwater Moving Into New Digs

Sweetwater Brewing Co. of Atlanta is moving on to bigger and better things as they transfer their production into a larger facility. The brewery that won the award for Best Small Brewery at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival is setting up shop at their new 25,000 square foot facility at 195 Ottley Drive in Midtown Atlanta. The move will give them the capacity to brew up to 30,000 barrels a year, which they say doubles the capacity of the old brewery. With the extra volume, they plan to expand distribution further into the Southeast. The staff at Sweetwater is planning a party to christen the new facility this fall, so be sure to keep an eye on our Events Calendar.

Sweetwater Takes Sweetwater to Court

Sweetwater recently took Sweetwater Tavern, a chain of brewpubs in Virginia, to court over the naming of the latter’s attempt to sell one of their beers in bottled form. The offending beer was called Sweetwater Tavern Pale Ale. A federal court ruled that the brewpub had to stop marketing their pale ale and the product had to be pulled from the shelves by June 15. Fortunately for Sweetwater Tavern, the suit only applied to the bottled product and the chain won’t have to change their name.

Terrapin Rye P.A. Recipe Available for Homebrewers

In the July-August 2003 edition of BYO Magazine, Terrapin Beer Co., brewer Brian Buckowski provided a homebrew recipe for his Terrapin Rye Pale Ale. We here at TheBeerCellar.com haven’t yet attempted to brew the Rye P.A. clone, but the hop schedule alone makes our mouths water. Stay tuned, as we will be publishing the recipe on the site very soon. Until then, you can find the recipe on page 9 of BYO.
